Members of the century-old Engineers’ Club (EC) of Toronto, which has a strong mining heritage, have voted unanimously to merge with the Ontario Club (OC). Situated at the metropolis’ Commerce Court South, the amalgamated club has a total of 1,324 members. The new crest will incorporate the two clubs’ old crests.
“We have adopted a mechanism that allows the tradition and history of the two clubs to blend,” EC President David Wahl told The Northern Miner. “It will provide an environment for the EC spirit to grow and flourish.” The OC board will be increased to 12 from nine and include five current EC directors. One EC director would become second vice-president immediately, and president in June, 1994.
OC will rename the Beaver Lounge as “The Engineers Room” to accommodate EC memorabilia.
Will the new club attract businessmen outside the downtown core? “The club can be reached through the underground complexes,” Wahl says. “Preferential parking rates are available to club members.”
Excited by the merger, one EC member says, “It is a good deal, mutually beneficial to two financially beleaguered clubs. This means survival.” As planned prior to the merger, an EC member whose office is a half-hour car ride from downtown Toronto says he will cancel his membership next year to cut expenses.
Trilet Group, a developer of non-profit housing, has agreed to purchase the EC premises at Victoria and Richmond streets for no less than $3 million.
