“Pride in the past and vision for the future” will be the theme used in 1998 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).
Anne McLellan, Canada’s minister of natural resources, was joined by CIM officials in making the announcement. The phrase, which reflects the contrasting but connected ideas of heritage and present-day vigor, will be shortened to just “pride and vision.”
“Our pride is for all that we have accomplished for Canada and for the industry since the Institute was founded in 1898,” said Rene Dufour, chairman of the CIM Centennial Corporation. “Our vision is for the globalization of the mineral and hydrocarbon resource industries in the context of an emerging world characterized by high technology and environmental responsibility.” The CIM is already busy organizing a series of activities that will take place across Canada to celebrate the centennary.
Among them is “CIM 1998,” the annual general meeting and trade show, to be held in Montreal where the CIM was originally founded. This event will be held in conjunction with the 16th congress of the worldwide Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI).
Regional activities will be held in conjunction with National Mining Week.
